Biography


1928 - Born in New York City

1946-1947 - Winogrand began doing photography while in the United States Air Force.

1947 - Studied painting at City College in New York City.

1948 - Studied painting and photography at Columbia University in New York City.

1951 - Attended Alexey Brodovitch's photojournalism class at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

1952-(1969) - Worked as a freelance photographer for the Ptix Agency and Brackman Associates. His work appeared in many publications including Sports Illustrated, Fortune, Look, Life and Colliers.

1960 - Winogrand's first "one-man show" was held at the Image Gallery in New York City.

1963 - Solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.

1964 - Awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography and he photographed California and the American South West during this year.

1966 - Exhibition "Toward a Social Landscape" featuring Winogrand as well as Lee Friedlander, Duane Michals, Bruce Davidson and Danny Lyon.

1969 - Second Guggenheim Fellowship.

1971 - Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

1975 - Award from the National Endowment for the Arts and was exhibited at the Light Gallery in New York City.

1979 - Third Guggenheim Fellowship.

During his life, Winogrand taught at a number of schools including the University of Texas, Austin and the Art Institute of Chicago.

1984 - Garry Winogrand dies in Tijuana, Mexico.
